About the Library

The Library, Documentation and Information Science Division occupies a unique place in the academic and research activities of the Institute. Over the decades, it has attained the distinction of being one of the richest libraries in the country. The Library maintains a network of four branch libraries located in major cities of the country (Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai, and Tezpur in the North-East region). It also acts as the Eastern Regional Library of the National Board for Higher Mathematics (NBHM), Department of Atomic Energy, Government of India since 1989.

The ISI library, since its inception, has been providing a variety of library and information services to its users. Originating in a small room inside the Baker Laboratory of Presidency College, the Library took more than forty-five years to get well integrated and was moved to its present premises in 1978. It has been serving as one of the resourceful libraries in the area of mathematics, statistics, and allied disciplines; thus catering to a wide vista of academicians and research communities. Currently, the library is occupying five floors measuring about 56000 sq. ft area of a ten-storied building in Kolkata. As it stands today, the library has nine functional units including Reprography and Photography. The Memorial Museum and Archive after the name of Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis (founder of the Institute) is also an integral part of the Library

The Library remains open seven days a week throughout the year, (except four national holidays on 26th January, Holi-day, Mayday, 15th August, and 2nd October) from 10 AM to 8:30 PM on working days and 10 AM to 6:00 PM in holidays, including Saturdays and Sundays (only the first floor will be accesible).

Mission

ISI Library promises to promote the organization of resources keeping in view of disseminating the knowledge to larger academic communities. It also engages with ongoing technological transformations to deliver high-class content and services for strengthening research, education, and outreach.

Objective

The primary objective of the library is to support the educational and research programs of the institute by providing access to information resources. Thus it meets the informational needs of potential users by providing timely access to print and electronic resources. It also envisages functioning as a centre of learning and research that contribute towards the advancement of knowledge and progress of the country.
